What is it about boys and bikes? It’s probably a symbol of freedom, maybe it’s the speed, I don’t know.. — recently a few of the boys were riding their bikes out in front of our house. Like good, responsible parents we have given them boundaries as to how far they can go on their own – when they ask (i.e. complain) about the boundaries we clarify it is for their safety. Safety.
After watching them for a while – I thought to myself, “Why not just ride with them, within the boundaries I’ve created, of course, so the law I’ve created isn’t broken”. So, I jumped on my bike with no intention of changing their current state of affairs. However… when they saw me get on my bike the question immediately surfaces : “Where are we going?!” and then: “Can we ride around the block?” and then: “Can we ride our bikes to the park?” — you see what happened?
When the boundary maker engaged in the affair(s), there became an awareness that the boundaries could change… because the boundary was made to keep them safe when I couldn’t be with them. Since there was the potential I was going with them I could keep them safe through the greater danger they may encounter beyond their home street. In essence: The “boundary maker” became the boundary.
God did something similar for us, didn’t he? The boundaries (laws) he made where good and perfect. They kept us safe. But God with us “Emmanuel” — as the boundary is so much better. Walk by his Spirit today, asking every moment what he desires… he will lead you as the boundary as he goes with you.
The verse that came to mind as I was thinking about all this was :
“We won’t go unless you go with us.” Exodus 33:15
