I am sitting in my office writing about my morning – where my heart is – and where I see God working…. my laptop sitting on my desk open with the screen “full blast bright”. Trying to ignore the glaring bright screen I write a bit more… then I turn to the next page in my journal and start the first draft of this blog on paper. I don’t want to pay attention to the screen but it is screaming: “Look at me”.. Hand writing this draft I reach forward and dim the screen of my computer to the lowest it can go and as I do it made me think: what is the brightest thing in my day?

Not in the “happiest / brightest” part of the day.. but maybe more like the “brightest / most distracting” part of the day. Like the wrist-watch-reflecting-a-sun-beam-on-the-ceiling-during-a-meeting distracting.

The other thing going on in my office right now is noise. Construction happening all around me (in the basement and right outside our building)… so maybe another introspective question for today and this season of Christmas would be: “what is the loudest thing in my life right now”? .

If you’re new to the blog let me introduce you to my family. My wife Lesley and I have five boys (3 months to 10 years old) So most of the time it is loud. Here is the rule they seem to live by : He who is the loudest is noticed… and to some degree it is true.. and to another degree we want our boys to know that being loud (and noticed) is not always the best way to be affectively noticed.

take some time and ask yourself:
what is the brightest, loudest, most distracting activity or voice in my life this week / month / year? Is it News, politics, social media, your phone, Television, a relationship that is unhealthy, the draw to withdrawal, the draw to take on everything…

And a slight twist for the Christmas season..

Maybe God tells us to “be still” because when we quiet our soul(s) it is when he has the opportunity to be the loudest voice. AND remember this — He came to earth, born under a start that was the brightest, born under a sky filled with Angels being the loudest.
